My research focuses on the mechanics and design of soft and heterogeneous material systems. I study how material composition, anisotropy, structural architecture, and spatial gradients in properties interact to govern mechanical behavior across multiple scales. My work investigates systems including architected soft materials, liquid crystal elastomers, multimaterial polymer systems, and other heterogeneous materials whose mechanical response can be tuned through variations in composition, microstructure, and structural design. I am also interested in sustainable polymer systems, where understanding the mechanics of heterogeneous and recycled materials can guide improved materials design and support a circular and sustainable future.

My research integrates theory, computation, and experiments to establish predictive and inverse mechanics frameworks for compositionally complex and graded materials. At the material level, I develop constitutive models that capture how mechanical behavior evolves with composition, microstructural alignment, and external stimuli such as deformation rate and temperature. At the structural level, I investigate how spatial distributions of composition and anisotropy can be designed to achieve targeted mechanical performance in graded and architected systems, where material and structural nonlinearities interact. Looking forward, I am particularly interested in combining physics-based mechanics with data-driven approaches and machine learning to enable model discovery, inverse calibration, and scalable design of complex material systems. These efforts aim to connect material behavior with structural performance and support digital-twin frameworks for materials and structures, with applications ranging from soft biological tissues and adaptive structures to impact mitigation and sustainable polymer systems.
